I'm looking into going to see this in person, and I feel like it's a bit overpriced. What would be a good offer to make (assuming the thing runs well as promised). He sent some photos of the interior and it looks pretty good

If most of you agree that this is a fair price, then that's okay with me too.

I'm not immediately turned away by its price, but there's a lot I don't know about it and your area. Is there rust? It's clearly lifted, so how was it lifted? What parts? The leaves look a little flat/sagged. Who did the work? How well has it been maintained? How was it driven? Does that moon roof leak? Who installed it and when? How is the interior?

Where I'm at one completely stock 97-01 with anywhere between 90k and 170k would be going for $4500-$5500 at a dealership if it was clean.

I actually live down in Moscow! That's a decent price so long as its as clean as it looks. It all depends on what youre looking for. If you're looking for a fixer than you can find them under $1000 around here. There are quite a few that have already been lifted and are in alright condition for around $2500. And then for a super clean stocker will be between $4000 and $5000. If you're willing to wait there are a lot of deals to be had, I bought mine running and driving with everything working for $400. Good luck!

I'm not against getting a fixer upper, I just don't have much experience so I don't want to get in over my head with repairs. But I would like something that I can learn to work on myself, that hopefully already drives well when it's purchased. I get unsure sometimes because I like this $4900 XJ just as much as some of the $1500 XJs that I have found.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I'll pursue this further and try to check it out this weekend (let me know if any of you know a trusted mechanic in the Spokane, WA/Post Falls, ID area who wants to make a quick $100).
Also, I've been warned about the head crack before, so I'll keep an eye out for that.
