Old fart with a wrench
The most fun I ever had on a dirt bike was in about 6" of powder snow! After that, you'll need your Jeep.

XJ. Look at it this way.
My wife and I recently considered selling our XJ and putting the money toward two Yamaha Grizzly 700 ATVs. Then I got to thinking about it and realized that it would be a stupid move. My reasons were:
1. Not street legal, have to have a truck and trailer just to be able to get to the trails.
2. Parts cost. I can go to the junkyard and get an engine for the XJ for $131.50. You will never find an engine for an ATV or dirtbike for that price. Same with transmissions and differentials.
3. Able to haul my wife, myself, our two boys, and still have one seat open.
4. No REAL gain in offroad ability, I can already go pretty much anywhere an ATV can go, except for between trees. Once I get lockers in the front and back and throw a winch on it, I don't foresee an ATV being able to go where "I" can go.
5. Safety. The older child has his own ATV, but I would still have to ride the younger one with me for a few more years. In the XJ, the kids are pretty safe. They are both strapped in and I will be adding a basic cage soon.
So, as you can see, for me there are more reasons to keep the XJ than reasons to get ATVs...

I used to have dirt bikes. It was a pain in the *** to trailer everywhere, then you'd have to find parking around the trail. Couldn't carry a ton of stuff like food and camping gear. It was a hell of a lot of fun to ride though.
