Default diesel???

I know they are rare, but occasionally a diesel powered cherokee pops up for sale. So, how are these engines? I really like the idea of having a diesel powered cherokee. But, how reliable are they? How is the availability of parts? Power, torque? Not looking for a fast Cherokee, just capable.
Opinions?

If I saw one in good shape and had the money, I would buy it.
They have less hp and torque though, but Im sure they get better gas mileage.

I wouldn't mind having one. Find some bigger injectors, two ridge runner pipes coming out the back a 45°, and bumper sticker that says Roll'n Coal.

nothing a block heater and some better glowplugs cant fix.

Fantic says the VM motors are usually used in boats over there, and they HATE the cold.

I have seen a couple diesel Cherokees in the U.S. just last week there was one for sale. I found it using jaxed.com. I think it was on fleabay. It was a diesel cherokee that was a mail carrier.
I was hoping to find out about reliability issues. I realize that there would be a power loss unless I bucked up and installed a turbo. I seriously doubt I'd ever do that.
It seems the overall concensus here so far is, if I find one, get it.

BTW, I watched that you tube video and almost fell out of my chair when I saw the sticker on the back window of his cherokee.
As somone else posted, his problems are nothing that cannot be fixed with a proper engine heater.

If all else fails, you can put a different diesel engine in it. Cummins 4BT, CRD etc.
