Did anyone build a Overland offroad camping trailer
Did anyone build a Overland offroad camping trailer
I am thinking making a overland trailer. I am tossing up the idea of modding a pop-up camper (Cheaper & Easier) or building a twin axle offroad overland trailer (Pricey & Harder). ideas and advice would be helpful.
If i start with pop-up i would find a decent donor. Make the stock frame stronger or replace it with a stronger boxed steel tube frame. since its going to have dual axle (electric brakes & 5x4.5 bolt pattern) with 33" tires. Will wrap the sides with diamond plate (aluminum).
It will be pulled by strong running 1996 xj with 33" and 4.10 gears
The Rear axle is from a ford explorer 31 spline with disk brakes

I am gathering info to start An overland project. I will be using a pickup bed trailer from a ford ranger. I also picked up an old pop up to see if i wanted to try and use anything from it. But I dont think I will at thing point. Im thinking the trailer will be more of a base camp to hold supplies and a tent. The needs of me and my family will be more suited to a larger tent. there are a lot of resources and info on the subject though.

If your not increasing the weight of the trailer there is no need for tandem axles.
I WOULD find a boat trailer axle or something similar for the heavier axle.
Then just do a spring over change, and a set of Autozone shackles for increased lift.
Your single axle will better better in the steep ups/downs than a tandem.
You will also need to consider going to a pintle hook hitch mount so your trailer
could literally flip up to 90* and not bind up.
I have a little 4x8 tilt up utility trailer that had a bad hub, I went the boat trailer
axle and cut it down to fit and changed it to spring over for lift and 235/75/15 from
the 14" tires and now it sits nearly level on my XJ with factory trailer hitch and
3" lift.

I didn't build a camper trailer, but I used a pop up camper for my Off Road Trailer

The trailer is a fertilizer trailer from a local agriculture shop. 1 ton axle, 6 hole chevy hubs witch i will be swapping to 5 on 4.5 hubs. 20 gl. water tank, 20 gl. fuel tank

If you plan on taking it offroad make sure to use a pintle hitch. A ball hitch won't get nearly enough articulation.

someone already mentioned to only run one axle and i agree with them. just swap out to a heavy duty axle and some 10 ply tires and you'll be fine with all the weight you put on.
