Just picked up an XJ without the inner wheel well liners. There is a big gap between the fender leading into the hinge area and floor.. There is mud and crap everywhere in the hinge area and floor from the last owner. I can only imagine how bad it's gonna get when it starts snowing with the slushy roads. I really need to get this thing ready for winter. Anyone else got any ideas on what to line the fender wells with? I have been unable to locate any fender liners used, but I am keeping my eye out. Hoping I can find something at the local hardware store to slap in there for now.. Open to all suggestions to keep the snow and ice out.. Thanks in advance...

You will definitely want to get new inner fender liners. I doubt a DIY attempt will work out very well. You didn’t indicate what year or if the stock flares are in place or if running large tires. Early liners seemed to disintegrate with age but large tires can damage them. There are a couple of makes of aftermarket fender liners available for a reasonable cost such as Action Crash. Some are reported to fit better than others. To ensure a good fit I have gotten used liners from salvage yards but finding them in good condition is a bit difficult. For earlier XJ’s liners from '84 to '96 work. The retainer kit from Crown for about $80 that has all the fender flare brackets, nuts and liner retainer plastic pins.

The liners won’t fit correctly if the fenders are cut above the holes for the flare retainers. Not sure if anyone has ever successfully modified them to work still.

Great question... I was wondering the same thing and was sure I would have to modify them.. Any input on this would really help before I get put there and have at it..
