Nice thread, good for d.i.y.'ers and the pros.

I have painted my rear bumper, front flares, steering linkage, shocks, diff covers, sway bar, front fenders where i trimmed em, bumper light covers, fuse panel cover, stabilizer, coolant and washer caps. Also some of my custom pieces, a-pillar light mounts, sub grille, battery hold down, spare tire mount, switch panel, and fan shroud.

By the way this was all rattle can.

Oh, and some various spots to slow rust. Haha

When you guys paint your steering and axles do you remove it all then paint or paint while on your rig. And how to do you prep it?

dont know how xj wheeler did it but I think it depends on what youre trying to do. trying to give it a good look? tape it up and rattle can it
I personally would remove everything and do it right because I have OCD about it
pull everything apart sand it alll down to bare metal and cover it with bedliner or something else to prevent rust and scratches. thats my .02

Three hrs of prep, decal cutting and paint. I'm sure it will last 1/4 mile on the trail before i paint a rock!

I painted my hood and front end myself with rattlecans, I probably spent as much as it would have cost to have it done but I'm pleased with the outcome.
I also painted my new exhaust with high temp black paint.

I usually think its probably not worth removing parts (if it takes a lot) just for paint. With my xj's steering and diff covers i left them on, but with the shocks, sway bar, and stabilizer i removed them as its hard to get to them. I used a grinder with a wire wheel to clean them to bare metal, because i needed to take care of some rust. Then cleaned them well with air and a clean cloth. It may not be the perfect way but its how i do it. I wouldn't suggest using water on bare steel to clean it as it will cause it surface rust within minutes.

On the other end of the spectrum, on my bronco 2 i needed to remove some of them suspension and other things so i am in the process of completely dissassembling the suspension, brakes, steering linkage, and basically most of the undercarriage to clean and paint it. So far i'm pretty much done with the rear.

Here's a sample, my bronco 2's rear axle.
