I was in the process of replacing the CPS sensor located on the upper side of the crank housing. when I got the old one out I noticed that there was a rectangular opening instead of just a hole for the sensor. I'm not sure if there is supposed be a cover or not. Here's my dilemma in the process of installing the upper bolt, it fell into the crank housing, does anyone have any ideas as to how to retrieve it other than removing the transmission? Needless to say I'm not a happy camper.

I did the same
and had a hard time getting it out myself. I had to remove the lower cover and remove the starter and use a magnet to get the bolt through the starter hole since it wouldn't fit in between the flywheel teeth and bellhousing.
And yes there's a plastic cover that go's on top for the sensor. Best bet for that is j/y.

Thanks for your reply, I followed your suggestion and it worked. There was one caveat, there wasn't an inspection plate. The plate that covers the bell housing for the clutch is solid so it couldn't be removed. What I did was remove the two large bolts, the center one is missing thanks to the repair shop that replaced my transmision about 4 years ago, they left the center bolt out. I loosened up the bottom bolt of the starter to give the cover more flex. I then propped open the bottom of the plate with a socket. I used a magnet that is attached to a bendable shaft, I was able to work it into the housing it took about 2 minutes to retrieve the bolt, boy was I glad.
I mounted the CPS by putting in the lower bolt and snugged it just enough to keep the upper bolt hole lined up with the bolt hole in the housing. I then used a telescoping magnet and put the edge of the bolt head on the magnet and was able to put the bolt into the hole. I left the magnet in place and by reaching up from the back side and front side of the housing I got a couple turns on the bolt then I was able to tighten it down with the wrench.
JeepingDan - thanks for your reply also.

i am putting my trans in right now that i pulled 3 months ago . to replace a cracked flex plate trans was only held in by one bolt . iused thread locker handy at the time to use or you could use grease to hold the bolt in the socket.
