Thought my 99 XJ with 130 was rust free! Floors rockers hood fenders. Then removed rear quarter trim to cut and fold. Good thing I did. If I wated until next year it would have been a lot harder.

Got a 94xj with 171,000 miles. Rockers are almost gone and rear lower quarter pannels are just as bad, also across the top of my windsheild is starting to show some ugly spots. Plus more areas I'm sure are just waiting to bloom. Love you too Minnesota...

Lol brilliant. And very true.

I take it you don't (didn't based on age of post) have a 97+. The reason the lower rear quarters rust out is the bumper caps: they trap salt and mud and hold it close to the metal. The foam is actually generic carpet underpadding (shredded/spun recycled plastic bottles) stuffed into sealed bags. On my '99 there was less rust under the bag on one side (guess it was tight enough to keep water off) and no difference on the other.

Why does the roof rust, anyway? I found signs the PO put some Bondo on the front corners and I've got a new spot starting over the front passenger door that goes behind the rain gutter.

On my '91, it's on both sides on the rocker, just under the passenger doors and on the passenger rear quarter panel.

Any bits that are not painted, plus the roof.

Don't forget to include panels which are only painted on one side.

OK, I have a LOT of rust behind the tires, at the bottom. Before I go chasing parts down, can someone tell me if these count as rocker panels, or is that just the bottom area between the doors? I just want to make sure that I look for the right parts.

1990 XJ 150k+ miles. Rockers, lower door under the trim, rear quarter panel under the trim, rear bumper brackets, wheel wells, floor is starting to get some. I wish I knew how to weld to fix this cancer.

Which tires is this behind? There's no area between doors, unless you mean the B pillar to which the seat belts attach?

Sorry, didn't mean between the doors, I meant between the axles, under the doors. I think I'm going crazy or something...

This rust is directly behind the rear tires, exactly where Salt would get kicked up in the winter. Not too bad on passenger side, but a real mess on the driver's side.

Ahh. Rear quarter panels is the factory name. Most of us just do the cut-n-fold on the lower part but a few have patched them. The panel is orderable from outfits like Classic2Current Fabrication but welding flat a piece that large with all the seams looks like a real pain if you don't need the whole panel.

Cool, thanks for the tips. I really should have addressed this 2-3 years ago... I'm going to get rid of the most flaky spots, sand to down, and cover with white rustoleum for now, while I decide what to do. As for welding, I'll have to look at how well my son is doing I'm college, it's his career path, so I 'might' get lucky. :-)
