Because no matter what we as mods do, they all turn to ****. We're tired of chasing our tails on it. As far as a "ban" on new threads, we have zero control over what people post. We only deal with the aftermath.
There's plenty of threads discussing this tired, old topic. Search. Because I, for one, will refuse to do a sticky on any oil thread.
It wouldn't be, trust me, LOL
I've said it before, I'll say it again.
Run what you want. As long as it meets what was engineered for your ride, and you do regular changes and filters, you should be fine.

Right on. I could see that turning to s*it real fast. I guess no one has to respond to a question if they really didn't want to. But some people have such strong opinions it's rediculous. Maybe we all just need to start asking people to search when they have an oil question. I also don't doubt that some people will do it in purpose knowing where it will go.
It was dealt with and the end result was a long time member got the hammer. That sucks. We don't like doing it. But will, if it needs to be done.

Hey Earl... Hope you are doing well Sir! I didn't know the connection with MMO and Mineral Spirits/BBQ starter but I have been using BBQ starter as a penetrating oil for years. I quit telling people how well it works because they just laugh and call me stupid and go buy expensive stuff instead.
Well... how about that!... lol

I've been using MMO twice a year through our vehicles fuel system for years. Usually April and October. I've seen BBQ Starter around here go for dirt cheap. So if I switch my exhaust won't smell like ribs or anything right? Don't need a bunch of stray dogs chasing me down the road.

I had the same experience with 5w-40. I thought it would be a great solution for year-round--heavier at operating temp and lighter for cold winter startups. I didn't drive it with that oil in there for more than 30 miles before I drained it. It made horrible piston slap-type noises. Luckily I have a manual trans that works great on the stuff, so it wasn't a complete loss.

Still above ground so can't complain. Both the wife and me got the"crud". Need to get to Doc's tomorrow or an Urgi-Care Center.

About the BBQ starter? Honestly, I think it is great stuff and really works well for a lot of stuff. I don't even think it would hurt to use as a regular fuel additive now and then.

It does suck and without going back into it too much... I just wanted to say that unlike most communities like this, the fact that you guys shared warnings multiple times and explained the WHY is to be very highly commended. Most sites it's just blip... gone... No warning or why after. It says a lot man...

^ This.
I've left several forums over the past year or so due to lack of moderation, one being a very well-known XJ site. That's the main reason I've become more active here over that time. Well done guys.
