For me it about value. Most xj/mj can be had in stock running condition for under 3k. Spend another 2k on mods and you got a good wheeler. I think 5k is the entry price on a 4cyl wrangler.. especially if it is low mileage.
IN my current xj I am beating on I have less then 5k and very few wranglers have been able to/willing to do what I will try and make. Yeah I had to add a cage but for a wrangler to take a serious roll it needs to have a bunch of work too.

the 2wd 5speed 2 door cherokees weight 2800 and the 4wd 4 doors weigh a little over 3000, my jeep weighs like 3086 i think, these things are light.

Owning both an XJ and a YJ, I can say that it depends on the use. For long trips I use the Cherokee (though I have taken the soft top Wrangler on a couple of 1200 milers - noisy) but for trail busting, I prefer the YJ. Either one of the two is better at off road and snow and mud than just about anything else.

the wranglers are priced high for one main reason theres money to be made on them my dad has a friend he owns a body shop fixes up jeeps all the time and he says when i was looking for my jeep he said go for the cherokee there better than the wranglers and the wranglers are priced high because of the jeep trademark name ppl get crazy money for them and rip off buyers

So I have a 96 cherokee that I bought a few month back it has 188xxx miles on it. My question is I have a rival enemy that bought a newer wrangler today and I am wondering what your opinons on wranglers vs a cherokee are. I fear they will be bais but I want to hear them anyway.
I've wanted a Wrangler since I was literally in elementary school, (think Mork and Mindy, and Daisy's Golden Eagle Wrangler on The Dukes of Hazzard)
But the negitives keep out weighing the positives, why should I sell my XJ and get a used Wrangler that will cost about FOUR times what my XJ is worth now, ($10,000 vs. about $3000) for a vehicle that is heavier, gets less MPG, has more road and wind noise, and has a worse ride?
But I STILL keep wanting a Wrangler, because despite all the short comings, YOU CAN'T GO TOPLESS IN A CHEROKEE!!!!
And you can't discount the cool factor, XJ's will NEVER be as cool as a Wrangler.
