My neighbors daughter and son-in-law are on their 2nd Fiat Cherokee. The first one got totaled and without hesitation got another. Funny thing is my neighbor hates American cars.

I'm almost strictly an import guy, namely Nissan and Toyota. And when I say import I mean Tennessee and Kentucky/Texas. But I do own an XJ with 200k on it, just as reliable as any of my other vehicles. That being said I wouldn't touch any new Jeep, except wrangler but they're way overpriced.

Also lots of new cars have trans problems, Nissan CVTs were horrible for a few years. All these problems could be solved with manual transmissions, but those days are almost gone sadly.

Imagine these new cars later on in a few years when they start getting older. I can just imagine the PITA it would be to find a short in a wire or a bad ground somewhere.

Manufacturers have zero interest in their cars lasting. They want the cars to last only long enough to get past the end of the warranty and to avoid giving themselves a reputation for putting out lemons, and that is it. They want people to be plugged into the matrix of perpetually financing new cars for their entire lives.

There are tons of strong good cars that are going to last a long time that are being made now or recently. Some just have wheel speed sensors, or more complicated systems inside them. People thought EFI and OBD2 were going to be the same way, but it actually made vehicles last longer, be easier to diagnose, and and require less maintenance.

Hello everyone my name is Sergio i have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo with the 4.0 straight 6. Recently i replaced the engine and tranny, it started for while would run fine until i hit the throttle then it would just act like it was choking and die out, now it wont start at all it back fires out of the intake when i try to start it. If anyone has any idea of what this can be please let me know thanks in advance

As a long time Ameriican car supporter/owner, I never owned a Jeep. I have been having a hankering to change that, and have been seriously been checking out the Cherokee. But as luck would have it, just a few months ago I seen a reliability poll on TV, with the Cherokee coming in first as the worst in reliability. When I searched issues of the vehicle on the net, I read that there has been some problems with the transmission that the dealers seemed to not be able to correct. Also acceleration issues.

Are there any inherited problems like this or others? Maybe certain models/years to avoid?

Of all the similar small SUV's I checked out (not test driving yet), I liked the Cherokee the best. But i have to check out the quality as I can't afford a big mistake.

Thanks for any imput.
Im currently driving a 2001 XJ with its milege reading over 260,000... I only faced one major issue with the electric wiring and cost me a good sum of money... But never faced any other major issue...

My friend owned the 2002 liberty and faced some issues with the transmission... Also the 2005 gearbox overheats and had problems with the differential.. I was off-roading once and a 2005 liberty and God its driver had a very difficult time getting out of the sand and up the sand dunes!! I was so impressed with my xj's performance compared to all these newer models.. Haha..

I also heard some issues with the 2008 kk suspension that was resolved in 2009... But again nothing major..
