Default Camper Towing Question

I am considering getting a camper trailer and was curious what is the heaviest trailer is safe to tow? I am aware towability is a function of available power, particularly where hills might come in to play and stopping ability, but not sure what is the max weight with these considerations in mind. Anyone towing a camper, what is your experiences and rig like?

a good single axle camper is fine. solid or pop up. electric brakes on the camper are a HUGE help. nothing over 1 axle is base recommendation, how ever the drivers door jam will give specifics on weight restrictions

It depends on your Jeep. The 4.0 with automatic box and transmission cooler is good for #5000 max. 5sp and auto without cooler is less.

I wouldn't go over 3500 lbs gross trailer weight max with the Cherokee. ( Trailer and contents! ) If you have larger tires than stock without a gear change reduce the gross weight rating. I would also not pull any trailer without brakes on at least one axle. If you have an automatic I would suggest adding an aftermarket trans cooler and a transmission temperature gauge. Two axle trailers will pull better than single axle trailers

Thanks for the replies, good stuff. This gives me a better idea for what to look for. I planned on adding a tranny cooler regardless whether we decide on a camper. If I do, the electric brakes makes very good sense to me.
