Look for the 8.25 rear end, not the D35. You can tell if it's an 8.25 cuz the pumpkin has a flat bottom.

The D35 is a weak axle for offroading.

Will it still be able to perform good offroading? Or is it a bad idea to get one?

They can snap shafts on 31's. I'm actually getting rid of my d35 for an 8.25 next weekend. Do yourself a favor, just get a jeep with it in and save yourself some headache.

The D35 can snap axle shafts left and right, and fixing ghat on the trail is not fun

Thanks alott, are the 8.25's rare to find? or are they just as common?

Most xj's 96 and newer have 8.25's. Also it won't have abs with the 8.25. Other things to look for:
- rot where the rocker panel and floors meet
- check the floor on top of gastank(covered by carpet in the back) for rust.
- make sure engine sounds good (4.0's are known to knock a little that's alright)
- and if it goes straight down the road, that's a plus!!

And lastly, make sure you love it. If you have doubt, don't get it, if it feels right, throw down the green. Gl
