Thanks a bunch for the advice and help - and the 144k, any issues with that mileage? From what I've read there should still be a decent amount of life left in her.

Thanks again.

personally, I wouldnt want it because I'd be afraid to cut it up or dent it
but the price is just way too high. I mean he'll probably get that price from someone eventually..
but that one is worth $4,500 for me, tops. even with the low miles. xj's just arent worth that much
you can get a pretty nice 2003-2005 economy car for $8000
Oh man what is this guy smoking?

$10K for a Jeep with just under 100K on it?

He is definitely asking too much. I know markets are different, but just last November I picked my Jeep up for $4800 with 90K miles on it, and I feel like I paid too much. You may be able to talk him down on the price a bit. Also it is important to remember that mileage is a good yardstick, but it's really the maintenance that determines the shape of the vehicle, especially with this particular vehicle that is dead reliable if maintained well. Make sure you have someone more mechanically inclined take a look before you purchase. Take it to a mechanic of need be, a few dollars for an inspection may save you thousands a couple miles down the road.

Both of my XJ I've bought had more than that. A 91 that had 294k when I bought it, it been totaled, repaired and has 314k on it. Still runs. A 99 which had 194k on it, been driven everywhere and on road trips has 212k (bout to be 213) runs like a top.

So no 144k won't be an issues BUT you still need to give it a run through. When/if you get it take care of general maintenance and check things that start to go bad at higher milage (belts, starters, etc).

That guy wanted 10k for that jeep on the website! I laugh out loud to the Dumb ***** who buys it. Considering I picked up my '01 limited for $3500 3 years ago with 85,000 on it.

Yeah, there are some crazy prices out there it seems, it's good to have a resource like this to get perspectives from people who know what's good vs what's a rip off. Really helpful for new people like me.

Default Thoughts on this vehicle?

I was too slow on one of the above, what do you guys think of this? What would be a fair offer (assuming things are as stated).

Thanks!

Hello everyone,

I know this topic has been given a lot of coverage - but this head cracking issue with the 2000-2001 models, realistically how paranoid should I be about it? Basically I think I found a Jeep I want and if I can get it for a descent price I'm strongly considering it. The only thing holding me back so far is that it's a 2000 model, manufactured 12-1999, around 100k, good overall shape.

My plan was to go for a 1999 based in some of the great advice I got. But this option seems so far to check all the boxes - except it's a 2000. All things considered, if you were me, would the year alone and the risk of some of the 2000-2001 issues be enough to sway you?

Thanks.

I'd avoid a 00-01 if at all possible. Its not just the 0331 head, yea that's a problem but its also the pre cats on the exhaust manifold, the coil pack and the fact it has 4 o2 sensors. All that together is enough for me to not buy one. Unless its super cheap with a bad engine so I can swap a 97-99 4.0 in it.

Thanks - I'm gonna pass on this one then. I would rather wait a bit longer than have buyers remorse. Appreciate it.

Everyone on this site will have their own opinion i.e. buy this, WHATEVER you do DON'T EVER-EVER-NEVER buy this, etc.
Pay someone trustworthy $100 to inspect your new to you ride.

Just thought I'd wrap up my old thread with an epilogue as I just got my first Cherokee. I ended up getting:

1999
Cherokee Classic
60k miles
4.0L, in-line 6, 242 transfer case
Standard (no mods)
Good body (scratches, ding or two, but no rust)

I'd like to put a cargo mat in the back to hold wet stuff, etc. Any recommendations? Thanks again everyone for your help.
