Thanks guys.
I am not looking for a lifted one or thinking of lifting one, I am just trying to get a jeep. That one is right around the corner and I just liked the look. I am def not an offroader. I am the schmuck that goes out for the 1st time and runs over a pebble and the transmission falls out. I have the worst luck so I don't tempt the fates.
Glad I am getting this feedback, selling the Caddy next few weeks and as soon as that POS is gone I am going to nail this down.

you'll find plenty of good knowledge on jeeps around here, but not so much on reading comprehension. don't worry about the axles, 2wd or 4wd, or anything like that. Rust and apparent maintenance are all you really need to worry about. Crawl underneath it and look for rust. If there's not much go ahead and grab it, for 3k bucks you'll have an awesome vehicle that will last you many more miles to come. Sounds like a deal to me. Good luck

Now that is the proper attitude for this forum! When tackling a big issue, buy more Cherokees. Don't forget to address the suspension issues you mentioned in your earlier post, they won't go away. If it's your DD take care of it.
if you do some things to upgrade your motor on i know 2000s it will throw check engine lights not a big deal no but just a pain if you are trying to resale I guess upgrades was the wrong word should have said programming I guess and not everyone has a computer to clear those codes or knows how to

what "things"
doubt this guys about to do a complete rebuild at home, i think hell be ok without it
Well, the reason we bought an XJ is because we need 4wd to navigate the 10 miles of county road between our house and the highway much of the year (like anytime it rains, for instance
). Definitely don't plan on beating it to hell just because it's 4x4.Otherwise our little car does just fine.
I chose an XJ because I wanted something with a manual lever 4wd instead of push button/****, which limits you to before mid-nineties for most SUVs. The other choices (mostly foreign) don't seem to have the parts support that Jeep does, and I think the S-10 variants are mostly junk compared to the full size GM 4wds. My wife wanted a more nimble vehicle than another Suburban or extended cab pickup for shopping in town. The ZJ/WJ were ruled out because of transmission weakness.
Three weeks in, I'm still trying to decide if all the extra maintenance (electrical, cooling, etc) is worth it for the Jeep compared to full size GM 4wds which have overall been very trouble free for us.

while high mileage xjs do require a lot of little maintenance i dont think its their fault. I think most average joes just think "its got the 4.0 and its a jeep, itll run forever!" and neglect them for most of their life. They just need a little love and they will run forever

Mine isn't high mileage. It's actually the "newest" vehicle that we have, mileage wise.
But they had electrical issues when new. Yesterday (first really warm day) I discovered that the electric cooling fan wasn't working, but fortunately it just turned out to be a dirty connector right next to the fan.
I had one that I put a throttle body spacer on and it threw a code and he probably want ever do a rebuild but I said i wouldn't either but I've got a wangler I'm doing that to right now so ya never know just giving a heads up is all
