Need some input on what everyone thinks about grand Cherokees. I found a 2000 for $3k and it appears to be in really good shape. Has a carfax report, no accidents reported. Has a really good service record for maintenance upkeep. Around 180k miles. My XJ had over 200k when I bought it and it still runs strong. Just wondering if the grand Cherokees follow suit and are just as reliable as the XJs so long as the maintenance is kept up.

I've heard of grand Cherokees having a lot of electrical problems how true that is idk but I regardless I wouldn't pay more than 2k for it with 180k miles..just my input

Why not take that 3k and put it into your XJ instead?

Lookin for a 2nd vehicle. This way my XJ would be my weekend/trail warrior and the other would take on the roll of a daily driver.

I've heard of the grand Cherokees having those types of issues as well, just wanted to get some more feedback. In no hurry to buy a 2nd vehicle, just seemed like a good deal.

Go with your gut and don't let the "I've heard" crowd talk you out of anything. I love my 95 ZJ, it's been one of the most reliable vehicles I've ever owned.

Is it a v8 or 4.0?

I know the 00-01 xjs have that 0331 head....so I would assume the 00+ GC's have em as well? Maybe someone can shed light on this?

If it's a 4.0 for a DD I'd get it. They run into some minor trans issues but on the plus side of that you can pick a WJ that needs a trans swap for under $1500 and swap a used trans in it easily for pretty cheap. They might not be AS reliable as a 4.0 XJ but if a 4.0 XJ is your standard for reliability, especially in high mileages then you're not going to like 90% of vehicles ever built.

I know a few people that own grand Cherokees the ones that have problems are the ones that never took care of it and drive it hard.My cousin had a zj for 8 years only problem ever was a dead battery once. But she took care of it and did the maintenance when it needed it.

We've had a Grand Cherokee in the family for a long time. We bought one when we lived in Virginia and that was before 1996 so its getting close to 20 years old. My aunt bought it from us and then she sold it to her brother after a few years. Its been pretty reliable, I think it had some transmission issues but that was the only major thing. Everything else was just normal wear and tear for a car that old. I am actually surprised its still running because my uncle and his family doesn't understand how to take care of anything.

People love to say Grands have issues, but then look at all the problems for XJs that show up here over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over (and over)

Well, with that logic, why not get a nice 4 banger for gas mileage? THat's what I did!

Exactly. I travel for my job so having the reassurance of 4x4 when needed and not having to chain up tires is why I want another SUV. plus I take some personal things with me so I need the room of a SUV.
