i was wondering ... i have a few old winches from my boat trailerss... would a hand crank work to use if i installed it ? just hook up the handle when i need it or would it be to hard to move

 

Really wouldn't have the power to pull you out of much. Not saying it won't because I've seen some weird things but it wouldn't do it safe enough for me.

 

can't be any worse than a ***-a-long whinch,give it a shot

 

yae thats what i figured .. just curious.... i have a come along for the time being .. dont plan on going in places i shouldnt... but then again

 

i might get a aftermarket bump and try it ...

Can't see why it wouldn't work but if you're really stuck doubt you'd be strong enough to crank it. I'd prob giggle a bit if I saw it on the front of a rig but give it a try, what's the worse can happen, it doesn't work.

 

It will work better than you think it would. Gear reduction is the key.

one thing about come-a-ling and the hand winches, it puts you right in the firing range if something lets loose,..

With a winch, you can hide safely in your jeep. Ducking below the windsheild incase something does let loose. there is a picture floating around the internet of a tow straps that got loose and the hook ended up flying through the windshield, through the drivers headrest, and out the back of the jeep. I think it was on a CJ7 or something,.. I cant find the hook.

Plus come-a-longs take forever!!!

 

And a cable snapping your face off trying to pull a 4000lb truck out of mud.

I hate the sounds the cables on those make when winding a boat up on a trailer.

 

Well guys, lets look at the cost of this. Granted i do agree that a winch is the best but you have to look at $$$$$ i would try it just for kicks as long as gear reduction was includedfor the weight of the vehicle

Also how often does a cable snap? and you have to look at why it snapped. Was it worn, old, rusty, mis treated, etc. Also with the new synthetic stuff...that snap isnt as violent as a metal strand...

 

I had to use a come-along and tow straps a few weeks ago to "help" an XJ get up an obsticle. talk about scary!!! I was so parinoid that something was going to let go. I was just thinking to myself "man if this thing breaks I'm a goner."

 

I carry a come-along even though I have a winch. If your against a tree or whatever,a come-along will pull you away from it. I have used it many times. Just get a good one and use your head and there shouldn't be any issues.

 

If you have a ****** block and a tree strap you can just use your winch.
