so this winter will be the first one for the xj while i've owned it that will have below freezing temps. my jeep is from canada and it has a block heater already equipped, the thing is i've never used one before.


also due to my ongoing radiator problems my coolant system has more water than antifreeze going though it, so to keep it from freezing up i want to use the block heater.

can i leave the heater plugged in all night without fear of hurting anything (setting **** on fire)?

 

you can use block heater all night. I leave my diesel plugged in for days. It will be important thad cord is in good shape as that usually causes the fire. I would however get that coolant balanced out. You should not put all your faith in the block heater keeping things thawed out.

 

hey it was -28C here this morning, better make sure your block heater is working!

get that coolant to proper strength, do not count on the heater cause they burn out/short out when they get older.

I use a timer for turning on the heater, you do not need more than 4 hours, after that you are wasting electricity.

I have mine parked in a non-insulated garage, timer comes on for 2 hours, by that time the valve cover is warm to the touch, start and go!
