Thumbs down blazer to jeep...help me out

Hello to this forum........everything we hear on the internet is true, right

I need a towed for my motorhome.......i have been a chevy guy for 50 years....I started looking for a blazer s 10...and found that chevy has had a hard time deciding on a tranfer case to stick with........

my problem with them is finding one that will shift into neutral...........

it seems that jeep made it simple for more years....

since i don't know jeeps i have a few questions...before i start looking

1. the in line six 4.0 seems like it is bulletproof, i've seen some with 300k, but how are the v 6's??

2 are the cherokees unibody....is that a concern when towing??

3. and in general what do i need to look for besides just the easy stuff....

i'm not wanting to spend a lot of money [4000 or under] just for occasional use.....but i am getting too dang old to do any engine and tranny swaps... so i will try to buy somewhere in between....

Check out that thread. Good info on towing behind an RV. You won't find anything easier to use when using the right tow bar and have the right transfer case. The unibody tows nice and makes for a lighter load, just make sure you get the right towbar mount. My recommendation is blue-ox. And IMO, stay away from anything with a v6.

I used to have an S-10... and the V6 in the Cherokee is the same 2.8L GM V6 that the S-10s used.

... in other words, awful.

Yes, stay away from the V6s. I have a 2.8L S-10 Blazer right now, power of a 4-cylinder with the gas mileage of a V8.

The straight 6 was made by Amc for 84-90, the 4.0 HO was made by Chrysler

Engine itself is still AMC, just the controls and fuel injection is Chrysler

A Jeep Cherokee is a whole lot easier to work on than a Cheby S-10 Blazer. The engine bay and front suspension on an S-10 are packed very tight. A Cherokee with a 4.0 is way more reliable than an S-10 too.

Get a Jeep and realize what you've been missing out on all these years. IMO steer clear of the ZJs and go with an XJ(BOX) cherokee. 4.0 is one of the best motors!!!

these little buggers do grow on a guy :-) .......How about the 4 banger ..??? i found this one......

http://cosprings.craigslist.org/cto/3599380314.html

i also found a nice 89 with 125000.........well kept..........but they want 3200 for it.........and i refuse to pay over market for anything just stock .....and this one was a 'NO frills" as the owner disicribed it ...

i probably would be happier with something that i could work on easily........i have a hopped up chevy 350 that i would like to put in something.......is that a possibility or is the v8 too heavy for the cherokee??........

for what its worth i think jeep recommends being flat towed not towed on a dolly, without driveshaft removal

man that old jeep is clean and you can even run historic tags and save some insurance dollars

I can't lie, my best friend has an 83 S10 Blazer and it's a hell of a rig.

It's got the 2.8 but has been modded heavily. It's got a full 3.1 stroker kit with Edelbrock manifold and a 650cfm Holley, and the thing just digs for days. Yeah it drinks gas like a fish drinks water, and the front IFS sucks horrendously, but damnit that rig goes. It gives me a glimmer of hope if I ever found myself with a 2.8 Cherokee. Wouldn't spend any sum of money on one, but if someone had a Cherokee for $250 and its only flaw was the 2.8, I'd pick it up and know how to improve it.

That being said, if your budget is $4,000, you shouldn't even be thinking about a 2.8 Cherokee. You can easily get into the 4.0HO's, maybe even into the "new body" 97+ for that kind of money. You should definitely be able to get something nice.

I'd definitely go with an xj over an s10. I own both, but my s10 is a 2wd single cab short bed with the 2.5.... It's going to be getter a 350 some time in the future.

Xj's are cheap, easy to work on and fairly powerful. Not to mention they are fairly capable on trails in stock form. I know the 4.0ho is rated at 190hp. Mine scoots pretty good, and runs flawlessly even with 212k miles. Best $300 rig I ever bought.
