Installing a wiring harness is easy and doesn't take very long at all. For the led lights is it necessary? Who knows. Is it still worth doing? Most likely.

I bought a set from Chris one of the first few and took forever to get them long story. When I did one was broken another long story but 2 months later got a replacement, I returned the broken one the day after I received it USPS Priorty Mail he had it 3 days later. Said he would have a replacement in the mail the day after he received,,,Right.
Finally going to install them in a week or 2 had been too disgusted to do anything with them now 4 mo. later.
If I had it to do over I would buy a new harness even if just to improve the stock set. I would buy the Hella's and be done with it, now I really don't need the headlights and should sell them. Extra lighting I added is plenty for what I need.
There are a lot of options out there now so many its hard to choose that's why I suggested Hella a well known brand. Good luck on what ever you decide on let us know what you decide on.

Thanks for all the great advice. I noticed that some people are having longevity issues with the Putco harness on amazon. It's evident that it's made of cheap wires and connections by reading this old thread(https://www.cherokeeforum.com/showth...=114440&page=3 ) and the reviews on amazon.
Sounds like you can get this one instead (mentioned in a reply above):

Does anyone have this harness from lmc truck and how has it held up? or know where we can buy a better one than the Putco harness on amazon?

Just like putting in a replacement bulb, really easy. You do have to make a hole for the cooling fan but otherwise its cake. Also you do not need a aftermarket harness because the amp draw from the LEDs is so little.

I bought the LMC and as long as your not me it is a cake walk to install. Don't cheap out and not do the wiring harness if you are going to do new lights. I ended up with the Rampage lights and really like them. It is crazy how much brighter they are than stock.

I ordered the FST hid. What a nightmare....no communication and it took nearly 8 months to get them. I finally did and have to say they are a great product! However I would not recommend anyone to order from his company. Long shipping times and no communication. I honestly did not think I was ever going to recieve it

Ended up replacing the headlight switch and it solved the problem. For anyone who wants to know, my symptoms were all other lights working properly, but headlights would not work.
Here is a good video showing how to replace the switch on a 2000 xj:
I installed the hella housings with the bulbs that come with on amazon and they are very bright. Running without a new wiring harness right now and I don't know why I would need them any brighter than this, so might just pass on the wiring harness.
Thanks for everyone's input/help

Nick, Nick, Nick..........
The **** poor harness is why your switch burned out!! Now you've put a larger amp load on it? You NEED the harness.

Truck-Lites. Yeah they are expensive but they will hold up in a crash that "totals" the Jeep (according to the insurance) with minor scratches, will last literally forever, draw almost no power, and make high end cars' HIDs look like Fisher Price children's toys.
