Don't do it.
Go visit your favorite mudding hole and cover your xj in mud. World's best paint job. Game over.

Make sure you mask yourself before you paint yourself. Especially in those tender places!!!

Implement enamel, hardener and acetone.

Lightly scuff up existing paint, mix up hardener and enamel, thin with a little with acetone. Shoot with a cheap HVLP gun and have a decent looking paint job for under $30 if you have the gun and compressor. If you need a cheap gun grab a HF cheapo for $20 and have a $50 paint job. If no compressor, well you get the idea.

I use a DA with progressively finer grit 120 - 320 til I rough the surface up.
Then I use Krylon rattle can camo. Once its dry I wet sand to even it off.

I painted my XJ white as a temporary solution to keep my XJ from rusting until I get a shop to paint my XJ black and do some bodywork. I used about 10 cans of rustoleum acrylic automotive enamel, some 100, 800, and 1000 grit sandpaper, 3 cans of gloss clear coat, 5 cans of primer, and tons of masking tape. I prepped everything by using the 100 grit on a sanding block, then I laid down 3 coats of primer, after it dried I sanded the primer with the 800 grit to help adhesion of the color coat. I sprayed 4 coats of white on the XJ and then 2 light clear coats. After it was all done, I wet sanded, and made sure I didn't get the stripe effect that most spray paint jobs end up having. I wouldn't reccomend using the rustoleum paint, it doesn't hold up over time. I'd get some expensive high gloss auto paint from a supplier if you're looking to have your paint last a while. Mine is already flaking off and I can't wait to have my XJ professionally done because it'll look tons better than it does now lo
