spray paint. I used POR15 and it's never coming off. except for when the rocks tear it off. and you can't touch this stuff up. it didn't stick well to the knuckles either and I only used it because it was free. the rear will be getting rustoleum

I used some farm and implement spray paint from tractor supply co on my current axles. Seems to be more durable than the regular ol' krylon and rustoleum, and about the same price, and just as easy to apply.

If they're taken down to bare metal, high build primer and a quality rubberized undercoating or bedliner. If not, then POR 15 or a similar chassis saver instead of primer and the same as above.

I used this years ago to strip paint doing body work. Generaly used it where multiple layers of paint were built up on flat surfaces like the hood, trunk, etc where a grinder would gouge the metal and could warp the surface due to the heat of grinding. Gloves and goggles should be used with it. I used to brush it on and wait about fifteen til the paint started lifting and then scraped it off. Hit the spots again where the paint is left. Sometimes a little steel wool soaked with the stuff got the stubborn areas clean. Afterwards, I recall some sort of rinse being neccesary. It's a bit of a pain to get it out of cracks and crevices so tape off those areas and strip them mechanically. Probably more work than just its worth for axles.
