the epitome of cherokee forum ladies and gentlemen
obviously cherokees. that's why we're all here isn't it? doesn't really matter what the base model is. you can put big tires and lockers on anything and it will go

I'd honestly say our XJ's. TJ/CJ/YJ's don't have any room. really depends on what your needs/wants are. short wheelbases are good trail rigs, not so good on rocks because of the short wheelbase though.

EOR 231 chasis and build from there.
I like the XJ's a lot, the biggest downside is the unibody. For serious abuse it needs some good plating and a cage.
If i had a lot of money, i would have a YJ or TJ buggy on tons with ORI's and 40's.

Really depends on what kind of trails. If I had it to do over I wouldn't build another XJ. Not saying I don't like mine and it does good but for what I've had to do to make it hold up to the type of terrain I wheel starting with something with a frame would have been much better.

i prefer the xj
actually i prefer an mj more since i like pick ups more but since theyre nearly impossibly for me to find
reasons:
-more room for tools/parts/passengers
-interior/exterior parts more availible in junk yards than any yj/tj (i have yet to see a yj/tj in any of my junk yards)
-over all in expensive vehicle to buy for relitivly equal performance
-less exposed to the elements
-easy to find with a 4.0 and c8.25
-hp d30
cons:
-unibody need lots of reinforcment
-floors love rusting out
-tend to have much higher miles than tj/yjs since theyre used as DD's rather than -weekend toys for much more of theyre lives
-harder to find a 5 speed(at least in my area) if you care about that

Non jeep for me would be a K10 or K20. Good axles, short wheelbase (single cab) and strong reliable drivetrain options. Cheap to purchase, and build. Another option is a 1st gen 4runner but those are a bit expensive and harder to find. Just my .02

XJMARC, got it correct, it depends what trails you are talking about.
If you only run serious trails occasionally and limit your tire size to 35 or so inches the XJ is about as good as it gets. If you are running serious trails all the time and looking to go with 37s and larger, I would go with a k5 Blazer with D/60 and 14bff diffs as a starter. Just my .02

Only problem with a K30 is their getting a little harder to find and more expensive (in my area Adleast) but ya any of the K series would be awesome.
