Bad Wiring...
Luckily, this isn't my XJ... It belongs to a friend of mine. It was a rather nice '88 4x4, ran like a top on her freshly rebuilt engine. They JUST bought it a few weeks ago.
The only 'problems' with it were seemingly minor annoyances- The previous owner had done some modifications to the electrical system to wire in a dash fan and the pumpin' new stereo. But, they didn't exactly do it right- and this was the result that the NEW owner awoke to a few days ago-
Luckily, no one was hurt- Happened in the middle of the night, and was outside & NOT in the garage! The Jeep is going to be parted out, the interior is too far gone to salvage.
The problem was most likely a wire that was run directly to the battery and NOT fused... Big mistake, as you can see. I had one of those on my XJ when I got it- They had run an alligator clip to the positive lead on the battery, then to a switch under the console, to run the heater fan. I re-wired it all through the fuse panel, so something like this won't happen!
I guess it was one HOT stereo
