I've got the tranny cooler, I thought they all had them. Do we have the tow package?

And out of curiosity, what's the benefit to the tranny fluid reaching operating temperature faster via the pre-heater?

because the best lubrication comes from when it is at operating temperature do its its viscosity at that temp. when it is cold it does not have that viscosity to lubricate well, the fast it is at operating temp the better it lubricates.

thats why cars now use a 0w-30 or 5w-30 cause on start up that oil is closer to operating viscosity than a 10w-30 is- better lubrication on start up

The transmission cooler was either available for heavy duty cooling package, stock on limited versions, or with the tow package.

The transmission fluid operating temperature is between 175-200 farenheit, the minimum for a correct operation is 150°, lower than that the fluid is too dense and premature wear of the pump, clutches and delayed shifting may occour, without mentioning the mechanical drag and fuel consumption increase.
Reaching the operating temperature in a cold winter day may take also 45 minutes of driving, with the preheater it takes just 15.

Ok, that is interesting. I do not have the tranny cooler than. I don't know if it even was an option on manual cherokees? It weird in town even with the air on it doesn't go above 210. On the highway it gets to about 230. I thought that because of the more air that was going through the grill that it should be coldest on the highway but I guess not.

Manual transmissions don't have a cooler, they don't even have a pump, lol..

Steve i say you have a clogged radiator, you're an '88 like mine, i've opened mine by unwelding one of the two headers and freed the clogged lines with a wiper blade stick.
Now it never goes over 210 but it is leaking.. lol

When the tranny fluid temperature goes over 210°, the preheater acts like a cooler.
This is good then!
Especially here during the winters, that can see -30°F temps...

Thanks

nope but we do have "oil slingers" built into the design of the transmission. and as things wear (just like a rear end, or a tcase)it could cause oil to not be slung properly causing a build of heat leading to harder shifting in warm weather.

And our manual jeeps like a GL-3 gear oil and only napa and redline make a GL-3 formula. NOONE even has a GL-4 anymore its all GL-5 which eats away at our brass syncros in the transmission....

I swear to god, Ive seen GL-4 around here recently...
Im not sure, but if I do see it... I'll remember to let you know.

Also what is the best AutoTrans fluid to use?
Ive just been going with a reputable company like Redline.
My car seems to do real well with their lubricants, so I figured, why not with my Jeep?

I wish someone sold Schaeffer, around here...

lol, I am in AZ where our regular temps get to 113 in the summer. and, yes, mine does run a little warmer... I plan on getting a fan shroud and checking/replacing the radiator with a gooder one.
