Default auto or standard

just wondering which is better for going off road drives?
i have a 92 with standard, and i am getting a 90 for cheap price and it is auto. i was wondering if the auto one would be good for 4xcrashing seeing it has lots and lots of rust on it. my 92 has better body shape and i think i would light to keep it for city use.

i would like to hear some past experiences with either the auto or standard trannys.

thanks

i started pretty much the same thread a couple of weeks ago. i found its more preference than anything. i was gonna swap in a manual, but i decided against it because i love not having to deal with a clutch when im in hairy situations......i let my tranny do the hard work!! i have also seen and had more problems with jeep 5 speeds. only seen very few problems with jeep aw4 trannys and personally have never had a prob with my aw4.

i would stick to the auto rig for wheeling and 5 speed for the street.

Unhappy Auto is safer

I was driving a stick shift 4WD pickup on an off camber high mountain road. I was in 3rd gear when rear end suddenly slid over the edge. I floored it and the engine stalled. Luck for me the truck stopped sliding & didn't roll.

If I had an automatic transmission, the engine would not have stalled, it would drop into low and pull me back up to the road.

An automatic, definately.

i like the manual more...you have more control over it...if you need a lot of tire speed, to get out of a bad situation, then with a manual, you can put it straight into 3rd or 2nd gear and just drop the clutch and go...but with an auto, youve gotta let it shift thru the gears, while the tires are spinning, and its a really easy way to fry a torque converter...and it may not even shift up into a high enough gear to get the tires spinning fast enough...

i just like the manual a lot more...i feel like im doing less damage to a manual then an auto...the main reason i just stated...some may say "well what about the clutch" but if your good on the clutch, youll never smell burnt clutch, you will do much less harm to it then an auto if you know how to use a clutch properly

when im on a steep muddy hill with my standard, keep one foot on the brake and start letting out on the clutch and as soon as i feel that clutch start grabbing i drop it and gas it..ive never smelled burnt clutch from my tranny...

thats just my .02
