Default Anyone had their jy durango box crap out?

So my stock box is making all kinds of noises so its time to replace and of course I want to upgrade to a Durango box. I stop and think, if my box is out of my 98 jeep and I'm getting a box out of a 99 Durango, then won't it be going soon too? I'm all about saving $100 and getting one out the jy, but is it worth just getting a refurbished one?

If you do buy one from the JY I would rebuild it.

Have you rebuilt a steering box before?

I googled rebuilding gear boxes and everyone says they'd have rather just bought a refurbished one cause its a huge pain.

I'd go refurb rather than the JY route

All I'm looking for is someone to come up and say they put a junk yard one in and had to replace it because it broke. But I haven't found that.

Well bleepin jeep has a steering box rebuild video that I'm gonna check out when I get home. Then I will make an assessment and either order one or hit some junk yards.

Seems somewhat doable but it would take a lot of time and patience and special tools. Is the swap really that great? Cause I can get a new cherokee box off rock auto for like $70 shipped..

no I'll never do it again. I picked up a refurb for $80. only noticeable difference is that it killed my turning radius. no noticeable improvements when compared to my friends rigs with the same tire sizes

I'm looking into a YJ box next. or maybe just go straight to PSC for a real upgrade. if your box is bad find a used XJ box on CL or go refurb. if you want tighter steering or more of a firm "feel" plate your frame inside and out, get a stout bumper that ties into the frame, and if you can figure out how to slug the frame with DOM do that too. you'd be shocked at how much your unibody flexes when you're turning big tires on the rocks

I think I'll just order the refurb one off rock auto. And I won't have to get longer bolts or anything. Thanks man.

As it turns out, advance auto does price matching so I showed them the rock auto price, they gave me the exact same part and I didn't have to pay shipping so I'm getting a new xj box for $60. AND I don't have to ship the core back I just take it to my advance auto.
