I know cruiser54 has experience replacing that pipe with one without a dent. Hopefully he will be chiming in with his experience.

I've noticed that he always chimes in if his name is mentioned, I think it's a sixth sense.

Doesn't this have something to do with the amount of air flow going into the cat?

Yep, reason for the bend is to heat up the cat faster to improve emissions.
