Advice for first XJ
Hey all,
I'm planning on purchasing my first XJ soon here. Wondering if I could get some advice from the pros.
What are certain things I should look for when checking it out? There's a few in town that look like a good deal (been researching a looking for some time), a 99 with 140k for $3k, and two 01's with around 140k for $3-$4k.
Are certain years better than others? Any special hidden rust spots to check out? Any mechanical or electrical hidden problems I should be aware of?
Anything to stay away from?
Thanks for your help,
Have a 5 star day!

The 00-01s have a head that can crack and a low pinion dana 30 front axle,I would look at 91-99 years virgin no lift or teenage owners. The common rust spots are the floor pans and the rocker panels which is the metal under the doors. And don't be scared of mileage if taken care of the 4.0 can run 300k no problem.

Year: 1999
Model: Cherokee
Engine: 4.0
The 99 was the best year of them all as far as new things with none of the 00/01 problems to avoid. Look closely at the 99 take it and place it on a lift to inspect the undercarriage for rust by someone who knows the areas to look for. That would be my advice if you like it may be cheap to pay a few bucks before you purchase to find out any problems.
Rust is the only thing that can't be fixed in several areas.

And before you buy anything i would take it to a garage and let them look it over. Its best to spend a few bucks now and know what your getting.Unless your wanting to build a rock crawler don't limit your search to just the xjs the grand cherokees 93-04 ride better on road are a little bigger. You can get a v8 if you want and the aftermarket for them is almost as big as the xjs.Fred can tell you he owns a xj and a wj i bet the wj is better as a daily driver because it rides smoother.
