'98 XJ VIN Help
I'm buying my second XJ and wonder about it's legitimacy. It's listed as a limited, but the vin says it's a Sport. It's a '98 and the code is 6, but should be 7. I know that they switched from Country this year, but 6 is not 7 and I feel like something is amiss. Any help is appreciated.

PS- How hard is it to fake the mileage?

Just out of curiosity what does the badging on the door say?
What kind of options does it have?
Are you sure it is a '98?
Reason I ask is cause according to this site a 6 in the 6th position would be a Limited/Country for an '00 or '01.
But it does appear a 6 for a '98 is a Sport.
Does it really matter?
I pretty much have put almost every option that an XJ can come with in my '00 Sport. LOL.

Well I have not seen it in person yet. I need to drive a few hours. That's why I'm trying to figure some stuff out now. As far as it mattering, it does to the extent that I don't want to buy some scam junkyard vehicle. The odo reads 127k and that too has me worried. It has leather seats, but the VIN should be the sole determiner unless there was some confusion that model year. It has a "Limited" emblem, but that's an easy thing to fake...
-Much thanks!

Did you bring up the discrepancy?
Private Party?
I think there are some things that you can get a handle on over the phone.
I was curious. Never really looked at my title before. It just says Cherokee.
No where on it does it say Sport.
But different states might be more specific.

Just occurred to me.
Did you run the VIN?
Or just decode it?
If not go here:
https://fcacommunity.force.com/RAM/s/equipment-listing
Even though it says '98 and down not eligible do it anyway.
Guys have said it has worked for them on older Jeeps.
Now the accuracy? That is a whole different question.
I know for my '00 it appears to be right.
Could bring up more questions then answers though. LOL.

Well the dude INSISTED that it was a limited and removed the post. I feel like there's a pretty big scam market with these vehicles. How trustworthy are the odo readings? Can they be easily replaced or hacked?

The 97-01 clusters can be swapped quite easily. Takes but a minute or so. It is not uncommon to see as the clusters can, and have gone bad, internally. Hacking isnt an issue.

Ditto on all of that.
I don't know about these vehicles being a scammers market so to speak. Most folks that have an XJ dont know what it is, or they are an enthusiast. To me on vehicles of this vintage, there is no real reason in paying attention to mileage, because they are old enough that **** is breaking down on them anyways (gaskets, seals, hoses, etc. Thry are either gonna hold together or not while driving down the road. I can't see paying 6k for a 50,000 mile 98, when I can pay 2k for a 2001 with 286,000 on the clock. You should comb over a vehicle thoroughly when you buy used, regardless of mileage. These are my opinions anyhow.
