98 XJ Plastic gas tank
There is no recall. I don't think there will be a recall because there is no reason for one. There have only been 44 crashes and 55 deaths since 1992 that have fire listed as the "most harmful factor". These don't even specifically list the gas tank as the cause. So it really doesn't seem to be a safety issue.
no they supposedly can only be modified for the 97+ but i have no clue why? Check the junk yard as i see plenty of pre 97 models on the street with tank skids all the time.

You sure its not a plastic cover, some of the limited and classics came with plastic covers over the metal tank, from i think 97-01.

mine is a '99 and it has a plastic tank. Yes I am sure, I have had it out to change the fuel pump.
I am glad it is plastic, it will never corrode, and it will not spark if impacted. Over the years I have had to change out several leaking, or internally corroded fuel tanks(not jeeps). It wont happen with this one.
If you are worried about it rupturing, build/buy a skid plate and install a hitch. I believe the poly tanks would be less likely to rupture in MOST situations than the stamped steel ones.
BTW I had to change brake lines on my XJ due to corrosion/leaking. I am glad not to worry about the tank falling apart too.

To my mechanically inclined eye, it sure looks like it's just a poly tank.

fellas, fellas... that's not the same plastic that they use to make coca cola bottles. trust me, i have worked with plastics that can wear down stainless steel.
the tank is safe. if a rock has scratched it, that same rock would have probably gashed through a metal tank. although it's not a bad idea to use a skidplate.

96 stock- plastic tank- steel skid plate..Thats how this one came. It was actualy ordered online new from factory so im not sure if the skid plate was an option but its a good idea to have one. As for poly vs steel. As far a being safe drop a poly tank off a cliff and it might leak a lot of gas but one sprk from the steel tank and BOOM! Thats why you cant buy steel gas cans anymore! Poly is mutch safer, Thats my 2cents anyway.
