Default 96 XJ Transmission Quirk

Rather suddenly, my jeep has developed a issue with it's transmission. It will get up to speed fine, it cycles through everything just fine up untill 45-50mph. Then it seems to downshift and the tach freezes at 1500. I can still accelerate, but there is resistance on the pedal. I can physically hear it rev higher, but the tach doesnt move. If I press hard enough, it will shift and spike to 3300 rpm. Once again, this only happens at decent speeds.
