I just became the owner of a 1989 2 door 5spd. XJ. I read an article about the 5 spd Peugeot trannys that jeep used but the article was vague as to wether the 89's had that transmission or not. So is it a possibility that mine has the Peugeot tranny? and if so was that the only manual tranny jeep used in 89?

"1987–Mid-1989: Peugeot BA-10/5 5-speed manual used with 4.0 L I6, 21 spline output." It's very possible. Should be some kind of ID tag or something on it somwhere.

 

Very easy to tell the two apart. If it shifts terribly, its likely a Peugeot. In all honesty though, they are easy to tell apart. The Peugeot is split down the middle front-to-back, whereas the AX-15 is a full shell all the way around. A quick google image can confirm it as well for you.

 

^^^ X2.....I have the well loathed AX-5, but it's a world better than the Puke-goat BA. Eventually gonna step up to either a AX-15 or NV3550

 

Ok I'll look tomorrow! It shifts very smooth I was really surprised considering it has 275k on it.
