Question Is an 86 Jeep Cherokee worth it?

I have the opportunity to buy a $300 1986 Jeep Cherokee, for my first car.

My question is, is it worth it?

It is a two door with the AMC inline 4 cylinder, and is an auto.

Help me out guys!

Yeah, it is, also we have a vortec engine sitting around, so I could swap it if that is a good alternative...

the swap would cost more than the jeep is worth, those little 4cylinders are pretty stout, especially for a first car.

My father in law has an 86 2 door 5 speed 4x4
I love it, I would have bought it instead of him if it weren't for my bad knee
Hell, if it was me, id jump at the chance to get the one you are looking at if its not rusted all to ****.
Not to mention if I could find something like that around here, id trade my zj for it in a heart beat

Is the automatic transmission in the 4 cyl the same as the inline 6 transmission?

Bought my 88 for $500 a year ago. 200k miles and runs great. Some new tires and she is good to go. I never owned a jeep before now and they are great.

The only thing that is keeping me from pursuing this, is that it hasn't been registered, so I don't know if it will pass smog or not.

I bought my 85 for $250 with the 2.5 and a 5 speed. It needed a lil bit of work but hell its 25 years old. Personally Id say go for it. As long as your in a XJ your good. most of the time

I bought a 94 for my first. 2dr 5spd 150k miles on the 4.0. Buying a vehicle is a pain. Check EVeRYTHING you may not think about it much but check for rust everywhere especially where you dont see it like on the floorboards. The 4.0 is rock solid and I have heard good things about the AMC 4 banger as well. All I can say is be careful and you get what you pay for.
