4X4 not engaging
Hello I own a 1990 jeep cherokee and it is having a problem engaging the 4x4 at times she trys but never prevails. With it being December and snowing the 4x4 would help. If anyone knows what the problem is I would greatly appreciate your help, thanks.

I would check the shift linkage on the transfer case. When I first got my jeep I could get into 4wd no problem but, it wouldn't come out. After adjusting the shift linkage it works great.

First check the fluid level and condition.
Here are details for the linkage adjustment.
SHIFT LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT
(1) Shift transfer case into 4L position. (make sure your shifter is fully in the 4L position)
(2) Raise vehicle.
(3) Loosen lock bolt on adjusting trunnion (Fig.
87).
(4) Be sure linkage rod slides freely in trunnion.
Clean rod and apply spray lube if necessary.
(5) Verify that transfer case range lever is fully
engaged in 4L position. (you can do this under the vehicle at the transfer case)
(6) Tighten adjusting trunnion lock bolt.
(7) Lower vehicle
Basically, you are just ensuring that the position you put the lever inside the vehicle is the same position that the tcase lever is in and then tightening the locking bolt.

Engage 4wd and jack up the front passenger side. See if the driveshaft spins. If it doesn't then you're engaged at the tcase. Move to the tire and see if it spins freely. If it does, then the CAD isn't engaging. Report back.
