I'm only 27 and that's how I was taught as well. Mind you the driving school was pretty cheap and the material was older than I am! Driving these XJs is comparatively ancient tech, even models with ABS are pretty rudimentary compared to the high-end no-brain-required models at the dealers today.

The difference is the 4wd Full time can be used on dry pavement without damage.
I have no preference. except to say that for the wife the NP242 is better because she does not not have to worry about the road conditions, dry, icey, patchy etc. She puts in in Full time and goes when there is weather around.
4HI/5 part time is saved and used its actually needed. Never on dry pavement.
242 in both my Jeeps it is a no brainer in bad weather.

Abs is a whole other can of worms. My jeep doesn't have it, I'm totally fine with that, I really don't like abs anyway. What I do miss is very competent 4 wheel disc brakes, what the jeep has seems horribly outmatched by the mass of the vehicle.
