3.1 What? The only 2001 Jeep I'm aware of with a 3.1L engine is the Export only WJ Grand Cherokee VM Motori 3.1L I5 (531 OHV) Diesel which has timing gears (no belt or chain).

Okay more info I have a 2001 Grand cherokee limited 3.1 (diesel) auto.
Being clueless about the wagon is it better with the gear system or more prone to go wrong?
