242 fulltime
hey,
I know i should probably put this the "tech" section, but Im not really looking for detailed info just now. Im just curious if any of you have ever heard of an np242 fulltime transfercase being successfully paired with a manual ax15 transmission?.
My 98xj currently has the np231 part-time case. Its solid enough, but with all the recent snow, it was a bit of a pain trying to judge the road conditions, and switch back and forth, back and forth from 2wd to 4wd..
I read on google that the np242 fulltime was designed to be paired primarily to auto transmissions, and if connected to a manual it could result in "gear slop".
Does anyone know of any success stories?.. and could anyone tell me what the hell "gear slop is"?!.
Thanks guys.

Gear SLOP,
IS wear in the tranny or the differentials and allows excessive free play causing a noise like a clunk.
As to the other question on the 242, I have no idea. But you might look up a viscous coupler that would go in the front drive line and allow you to run the 231 full time without worry.

From what I have read, the NP242's Full Time 4WD is an open center differential system, and does not have a viscious coupler like the NP249 in the Grand Cherokees.
When in 4H and 4L the center differential locks. I believe I read this somewhere.
