Damn. The Jalopnik commenters already beat me to it lol.
> 1. "The Original XJ Wasn't A Truck"
And neither is the 2014 Uglykee... are we missing something here? And what Original XJ? There's no "XJ 2.0"
> 2. It's More Powerful
So there's a higher peak torque and horsepower. When is it available? The I6 can rip your face off just above idle.
> 3. It's Dimensionally Better
> 4. It's Taller
Okay... so the belly covered in full of low-hanging **** just begging to get destroyed by a rock is slightly higher up than the XJ's differentials... wow that's fantastic. Some of the angles are nicer - wait a second - is this base to base or UpCountry to Trailhawk? Something smells fishy...
> 5. Its Crawl Ratio Is Nearly Double
Probably the only valid point in that whole article. The whole Rubicon program with 4:1 transfer case was a later deal. Though with the cost difference between an XJ and the 2014 thing, you could just BUY a lower crawl ratio and still save...
> 6. It's More Fuel Efficient
Uh what? The XJs with the 2.5L TD got 32 MPG easily. Did they pull 20 MPG off of Yahoo Answers? Lots of people driving stock XJs are able to achieve 28 MPG with the I6. Even the EPA Estimate is higher! That said, it does indeed have a yet-to-proven modern engine that I was reading about developing a tick after 8000 KM. Sounds fabulous. Let us know when it can stand up to the types of abuse most neglectful owners put it through - nevermind actual Jeep activities.

Let's say you have a colored ball. It's the best ball in the world. You love it so much, you'd do anything to have another ball JUST LIKE THAT ONE. Let's call it Larry.
Now let's say that the company that manufactured Larry comes out with a block. Yup, a block. They call it Larry, too! They say it's rounder than Larry. That it's smoother, and bounces better! Well that's impossible - Larry is a ball! ***** are rounder than squares! This new plastic block ain't got nothin' on your rubber ball. But some butthurt fanboys who can't separate facts from opinion think it's the best Larry ever - despite it not actually being a Larry Bouncy Ball.
It isn't a matter of opinion at this point. It's about people being full of ****. I guess Jalopnik isn't an actual news agency, though, so they can just make stuff up without worrying about pesky stuff like 'journalistic integrity'. You can like it all you want, but it ain't a Cherokee. It isn't even a Jeep.
Yup. 34 PSI in 225/75R15s on a 5 speed, turning about 1900-2000 RPM down the highway, windows closed, no AC. Not even drafting that much! Look up what other manual drivers are getting highway mileage.

I understand you feel betrayed and I agree, we all should feel that way. This is no contemporay XJ. Imagine how full size Cherokee owners felt when their ladder frame full size was replaced by a coil sprung, unibody, compact stationwagon. Never talked to someone who had that experience, but I would think they felt betrayed. From Jeep's perspective they are "revolutionizing" the midsize market again (4L, locker, 9 speed). With that perspective, "Cherokee" is the perfect name. I fully realize that this Jeep will never be some extreme offroader, but the market Jeep is gearing this towards will use it fine and have no need for anything more. The people who need something more, won't buy it. An XJ type Cherokee in Jeep's current lineup is too similar to the 4dr Wrangler to justify. Who knows what advancements in technology will allow innovative people, like yourself, to modify a independent suspension vehicle like this. We don't see now because we don't know what we don't know. My grandmother never thought of an ipad when her brothers were making the first tv in their neighborhood from a kit either.

Very true. So why would you call the new block a Larry, then?
1: I will guarantee that thing will keep traction better than a stock XJ due to the recent advancements in traction control technology.
2: That video sucks and proves nothing, not impressed at the lack of exterior video. I wonder how much footage they had to edit out. I'm sure they just released that in an attempt to "prove" to folks like us that it will be capable and hope to shut us up a bit.
3: That thing is a car underneath. Some hits our stock XJ's can take, would total that thing.
