I was at the junkyard this weekend and picked up a hood orniment off an old waganeer that im going to put on my cherokee. While i was there diggen through all the cherokees i saw a Cherokee Cheif, the back said it had a 2.8l V6. So i poped the hood and i couldnt believe it. It was a V6 in a Cherokee! Any one driven one of these or how they are off road. Just curious. The body wasnt old style either. It looked like early 90s to late 80s.

From what I've heard, the old 2.8L V6's were a crap GM engine. I've heard they were rather underpowered, but other than that, I wouldn't know. I put only so much stock into heresay.

yah, they were put in 84 thru 86 Cherokees. Ive got one in one of my 84z and love/hate it. I call it the briggsandstratton engine. crappy low end, but decent top end. and with 249,600 something miles. changed oil once in it when i first got it which was almost 21,000 miles ago. only has needed little over 2 quarts top off in last 3 years/21,000 miles. tough@$$ little motor!

The GM 2.8L can be found in the 80's 90's Camaro, S10 pickups, and small blazers. They are under powered and are known for intake gasket blowouts and head gasket issues. There is nothing great about them at all. Which is probably why that XJ was in the J/Y
worst. engine. ever. had an 83 S-15 with the 2.8, and it was horrendously slow. Sounded MEAN straight piped though....heh....but, it couldn't keep up with a tercel.

i used to have a 4cyl. s-10 and my friend had a 2.8 jimmy, and mine had way more power. it's been to oregon and back (to toronto) 5 times with no issues.
