1998 Jeep Cherokee mods - viscous to electric fan
Our XJ over heated at the drop of a hat!
After searching high and low, we decided to follow our own devices and ripped out the old (useless) viscous fan, cut it off short - close to the pulley, next the off-the-shelf 40 cm electric fan was made to fit the cowl, a relay was fitted, some wiring was done and THEN we purchased a standard thermo switch, welded a matching nut onto a 4 inch piece of pipe, inserted it into the bottom radiator hose and attached the wiring!
We have been doing some serious offroading in sand dunes on the Eastcoast of Soutern Africa (Mabibi, Rocktail Bay, Black Rock, Bhanga Neck and Kosimouth) Not one incident of overheating!
We have pics available if you are interested. Any comments?

Just remember to always check the operation of the fan before a long trip. I want to put electric fans on my DD but I'm paranoid about a failure. Provided the belt is on, the mech fan will always work and it doesn't add tons of uneeded drag to the engine IF the viscous clutch is functioning.

Viscous to Electric fan
Unfortunately, here in South Africa spares on this model is very hard to come by. Trying to replace the viscous fan (clutch was totally shot) seemed impossible........
The electric fan works exactly (well, with a small difference) like any vehicle that is factory fitted with an electric fan. The thermo switch kicks in at 87 degrees C and switches off at 82 degrees C with a supply from the constant power grid! It runs until the temp is reached and switches off even if you have left and locked the vehicle!
As said in my previous thread - there are pics of the mods on our profile now.
BUT thanks for your comments and concerns ...............
