Default 1998 Cherokee 2dr for $500?

Trying to get some quick opinions on a Jeep Cherokee a friend of mine has for sale. He's thinking of parting it out, but said he'll sell it to me for $500.

It's a 1998 Cherokee 2 door, 4.0L 5 speed manual and 8.25 rear. It's got a little rust in the front floors starting, the passenger rocker is getting bad (has a replacement rocker that comes with it, they already replaced the driver's side), and the spot in front of the driver's rear tire. The Jeep has 408,000km (254,000mi), but randomly stopped running and he doesn't want to bother with it (cranks over but won't fire).

I'm debating if I should buy it for parts on my 4 door Sport, or to use mine as parts and drive the 2 door (my XJ needs rockers, front floor work, rear wheel lip work, and the quarter's patched).. Mine's power everything, and the 2dr is manual everything and competely stock.

Any opinions if it's worth it, or just buy the small parts I wanted instead for mine..

I would put that money towards new wheels and tires for your XJ lol. I mean, only you can decide if it's worth it. How much do you value $500? The thing appears to be in pretty rough shape, and your XJ looks pretty damn good in terms of body and lift.

I agree that the red jeeps needs tires, but you have to remember that he is in canada and everything is rusty in the north. Some are just more rusty than others and I honestly dont think its that bad (MI person here). I personally would buy it for $500 and either make it a beater that gets 20+ mpg or part it out yourself, Ive made money with less on XJ's. I'm still kicking myself for not buying a 98 2dr 2wd 5sp for $700 that I could of used for a DD. I can attest that stock 5sp XJ can push 23mpg

Buy it and part it! There's lots of money to be made on these things. Especially if it's got good parts. I just picked one up for 400 bucks myself off of a fraternity brother of mine. Those are cool with the 5 speed.

Haha well those tires on my XJ were just for a 6 hour drive (12 hour total) I had to do recently and wanted to get some fuel mileage compared to the 34/12.5 MT's I usually run, I just haven't switched them back. The 2 door is a 4wd with the 231 transfercase and actually has less rust than mine.. Also, we ripped of the driver's rear flare and door trim while looking at it to see what it looked like underneath (seemed solid).

TheJerm is right, rust free Jeeps are a little harder to come by around here, so I'm trying to decide if which is an easier/better toy (as it's also my DD). I should of taqken pics of the rust on my XJ for comparision lol.

Offer him $300 and dont look back. I bought my 98 4-Door 5-speed for $200 because the front axle was falling out of it, literally. It was hands down my favorite and best jeep I've ever owned. I dont regret anything about buying it and honestly wish I still had it. If that Cherokee was closer to me I'd say give me his number and I'd try to buy it and go get in in a heartbeat.

Ah, sorry, I didn't look at location. I live in North Carolina so I paid $1,800 for my XJ rust-free with 121k. Not used to seeing rust heh

Haha, well the other thing is that I currently don't have a parking spot for it in my driveway (as I'm up to 7 cars) till I sell 2 of my other cars lol, so he's offered to keep it in his driveway till I can get it home if needed.

To bad you werent closer to me or I would defiantly love to get his # and adress. But sadly transfering titles from canada to the US isnt always the cheapest method...Nor is the gas to go get it lol

Well it's looking like I'm going to borrow a friend's trailer and pick it up within the week. Still not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, but as E-Rok said I should be able to make money off it even if I take what I want and part it. Going to try and work out getting it for $400 though lol.

Turns out he actually saved it from the crusher as that's where it was headed before he bought it, so even if I part it out, I'm still doing it a favor by helping part of it live on lol.
