I am in the process of restoring my stepfather's 1989 Jeep Cherokee. The problem I'm having is trying to find out exactly what engine went in that model. I keep coming across 2.5 liter and 4.0 liter engines, but I'm not sure which one went in it. Also if someone could point me in the right direction to purchase an engine for it, that would be greatly appreciated. And this one is a U.S. model.

If you're going to put an engine in it, go with the Straight 6 (4.0), not the 2.5.

Enter your VIN and it may work even tho it says pre-1998 doesn't work. It worked for my 89.
Engine-wise, if it's a four cylinder it's the 2.5, 6 will be the 4.0.

if you happen to live near NYC, I have an 89 that would be a great donor. Would only suggest the 4.0 i6.
