Default 07 f350 axles...quick question

i was told the knuckles are cast steel, which is weldable without heating and can be welded with a 7018 rod...but what about the pumpkin, is it cast steel or iron?

nodular iron or cast steel. lots of guys just use mig too. afaik. 7018 looks pretty though. personally i would do a small root of 6010 since it likes to dig and would help burn out oil and grime, then go over with the 7018. but thats just me. there are a lot of discussions on this over on pirate, you should do some reading over there.

well im currently in welding school, doing out stick module right now, tig is next...but i asked teacher about cast steel and he said 7018 no heating required....but if its cast iron then its a whole different story...

so im needing to know whether the pumpkin is cast iron or cast steel? reason i ask is i was cutting into the pumpkin area to cut off the brackets and such and cut too close and now have a hole about 1" wide, need to patch it up, but not knowing what material it is im unsure what patch plate material to use and what method to use to weld it tight and not affect the integrity of the rest of the pumpkin

thx hank....i think what i plan to do is a spark test just too make sure...but i did open thread over on pirate and did a bit of looking around...seems some ppl do this as a mod to get more axle tube to weld to...i was just looking to get rid of the bracket and cut too far in by mistake..

anyways, when i do get my axle back ill weld it up and post a few pics
