You went out and wheeled? comment above said you don't. So if you are not climbing rock or mud then yes your bumper fits your needs.

always feel nice to actually make something yourself, doesn't it?

Haha I think he meant it's not made for climbing huge rocks, but that it's made for all the rest. lol

i like to do level 3 and some level 4 trails. i dont go out and climb rocks the size of trucks and schoolbus's. I wheel my rig but i am not big on killing my jeep after rebuilding the whole thing. i am not 19 anymore. I will most likely build a rock buggy in a few years. I will usaully take on whatever in front of me but if there a chance i may *** my jeep up then i wont do it. Thats one good way for lose thousands of dollars and many hours of work.

So, did you say 17,500lb winch?

If so do you think the flat metal you are using will withstand the pulling capacity of the winch? I have bent my Warn 8274 winch mount and that is 1/4". That winch only pulls 8000#s.

I'm no expert and don't claim to be, however I have a good friend that owns SKF Manufacturing aka Skidrow Automotive and he has been helping me with a front bumper build for my 8274. My design is similar to yours accept everything site on top of the "side mounts" for more of an aproach angle. ( but with that out front it's like carrying a boat anchor up front.) He strongly reccommended I use a round or square tube between the mounts for rigidity. This will help reduce the amount of flex when pulling.

I like your ideas and am waiting for more pics. BUT...

I must agree with an earlier post that in its current state it leaves little to be desired.

I noticed your "D" ring mounts are not supported very well on one side. I assume since it's a work in progress this will be addressed. They can become very deadly if ripped off.

Good luck with the build.

I checked out your build thread. I have to agree, and say I think you are an exceptional fabricator/builder. Everyone has different tastes, but when its all said and done, you can tell if someone is a good fabber by their attention to detail, and it looks like you have that. Good job!

thanks for your replies. the bumper will be supported with gussets and tie-ins bars. there is more going in the bumper. but 4 right now i am way to busy with higher education to keep working on it. it is built with super strong 1018 1/4" low carbon flat plate steel. The steel tensile strength is 63800 psi. It over kill steel from a cell pole company.

The winches pulling capacity isn't what matters here. It's the wait of the rig that matters the most. The more the rig weighs, the more stress is being put on the winch and winch plate.

just curious, but why did you choose the 17500 winch? not saying you dont have a reason, just saying i dont know of one. seen a 10000 winch pull a jeep off the ground and up a tree, completely suspended in the air....not hatin on it, itll be a BA winch, just dont see the NEED for it, get what im sayin?

bumper looks great BTW

The Recon 17,500lb Brute Force Series Winch is overkill i agree. but i am paying only $449.95 for it. I had a warn 9500 winch and it would get hot to fast. plus there to pricey

it is overkill, but thats not a bad thing. Means that you'll be able to pull harder for longer without hitting the duty cycle on the winch. In other words, anything he'll be pulling will be easy work for the winch instead of potentially maxing out a 9,500lb winch. Smart Idea if I don't say so myself.
