Default Weekend rear bumper project

For mounting in, on the drivers side i was only able to get 4 bolts to the unibody cause the gas filler next was in the way

The passenger side I was able to get just about every factory hole to line up.

I still have to cap the end of the tube that run under the qtr panel, and burn in some tabs for D-rings, and then paint/bedliner. And maybe if i get fancy, weld in some plate to fill in the gap between the bumper and body, and under the tail lights.

This is my first real time working with metal, and welding,... i know where i have to improve, and maybe when I cut my rockers out and weld in some tube it will turn out better

2x5 1/4in thick is the main body

2x4 3/16 is the box under the qtr panels

2x4 3/16 is the brackets that slide into the unibody.

1/8in thick by 2in wide flat bar to close up the tapered ends of the main body

I went to a trailer store and picked up the receiver for $15

My next adventure is cutting out my rocker panels and welding welding 2x4 3/16 tube in its place.

I saw you thread about the front bumper. Nice work! I picked up a used C4x4 winch bumper for the front of my cherokee a while ago. My rear bumper has its flaws, but from 8 feet away, it looks pretty good.

are you doing a write up on this when you do it?

I want to do 3x5x1/4" or 2x5x1/4" box for mine.

and when i do my rear bumper i will use all 3x6x3/8" box just like my front bumper and i will follow what yours looks like.

that looks sweet I'm gonna be making something similar soon. What did you use to make the brackets for the shackles?

Its actually part of the 2x4 3/16 tube i used for the mounts on the bumper. I left one of the sides of the 2x4 tube extended when I cut the mount, then I cut a slot in the main body and slide the extended peice through that. Thus when pullin on the shackes, it will be pulling on the mount more than just the main body of the bumper. Then I'm gonna weld some 2inx3in 1/4 thick(approx size) tabs to the extended part and drill a 7/8 hole through that for shackles to hang from. The shackle mount will end up being about 3/4 thick. Drilling a 7/8 hole in that is gonna suck,..

kinda hard to tell,.... i didnt take a pic of the 2x4 mounts alone,...

Bumper looks good. Next time try 50 or 80 grit flapper wheel on 4 or 4 1/2 in grinder. they do an awesome job smoothing out welds. Lot cleaner and easier than grinder wheels.

That rear bumper looks really good...
Great work on the design and seems perfect for those rear bumps off-road...
