Default waggy Dana 44's... how much fab work?

i know that ill have to cut the perches and everything off all the way down to bare tube pretty much... then go from there... are they really that hard to fab in? does anyone make spring brackets that pretty much are get your angles right and sit perfect on the tube for weld in for a XJ? or are they close and you have to modify just alittle? i can get a drivers side drop front and the rear D44 from a waggy in my JY $200 for both... said thats just my price though... lol... thats pretty good... i can sell my D44 in my XJ and make more then that back and then sell my D30 with WJ knuckles and all to cover the cost of the new brackets and stuff... well most of it anyways... the back will be easy i know... the front... not so much... just wonder how bad really... i wish i could help someone else do it thats done it before... lol... i plan to run 37's and 3 or 3.5in of lift is my thing and i think full width will aid in helping that work...

just read all of it... alot of good info but he talks about running the ford D44 and cutting it all up... not worth the time and money to me to go from low pinion to high pinion D44... maybe if i competed or something but otherwise youll hang up on several other things long before you hang up on a pinion... thats what i think anyways... but otherwise makes the rest of it look easy...

Just so you know waggy 44s are the same width as XJ axles so not full width except for wide track axles but they have a pass drop front.

naw there wider... just barely... like an inch on each side... 1980 and up are drivers side drop... 83 and 84 had vac discos... but yeah there not a true "full width axle"

Dont remember the particulars but some of the Waggy rear 44's are offset.. thats not one you want.

You might wanna drop KTM a PM, he's pretty knowledgable on these things and low COG. You may or may not run into issues with clearance with a low lift that most of us are unfamiliar with.

I'm not so sure a LP Waggy 44 would be much stronger than a HP30. Got a bud running one in an MJ with 36's, while his diff is holding up he has issues with breaking shafts often.

I'd love to build a HP44 from a Ford using Waggy shafts, may do one for the next rig.

yeah i PMed him right after i started this... lol... he says stock to stock the waggy D44 is as strong as a D30... i read somewhere that the waggy inner axles taper down to a size smaller then the D30 even... which is kinda retarded... so all the people that cut down there ford axles to use waggy front axles are just making them weaker i guess... so that means to either run a ford d44 axle for the width that it is or go D60... or i think i may run 37's on a D30 built the right way... cause i dont want to pay $1200 for a front D60 and the spend another $500 just to get it bolted in in fabrication...

The Ford dana 44 is the same width as a Ford dana 60, 67" wms to wms. I know cause I am currently running a 79 F250 Dana 44 and a buddy is running a 78 model 60 and they are the same width.

Let me correct myself... while you can use waggy shafts (i'm not informed on the taper) they do this to get stock widths. I'm sure those guys running bigger tires are also dropping the coin on upgraded axleshafts. Otherwise your spending alot of money on custom length shafts, both for the rig and spares.. it adds up quickly.

from NC 4x4

is from a Quadra Trac equipped Jeep. They used the Q-T from around '70 to '79 in FSJs and '76-'79 CJ-7 w/automatic trans. All of them equipped with the TH400.
Jeep also used the D18 case in the early Wags and they were also offset. However they are junk axles. Coarse spline and closed knuckles. They have a 5 on 5.5" wheel pattern.

i didnt say they were different? im saying most everyone that runs the 78 79ish front D44 cut it down to run waggy D44 axles so that they get factory like widths... your may not be cut down... but i think thats better since the ford inners are stronger then the waggy inners...
