Default Swinging Stinger Bumper Build (slow build)

So over the past couple weeks I have been researching the idea of building a front bumper for my cherokee. In doing so I had broke down and needed to be towed home, so I thought I would make it easier for the next time I have to get towed home through this build. Im going to attempt to bring the system that the old jeep wranglers in WW II had along with a stinger/brush guard design found on wranglers today.

Along with meshing these two ideas together, I am also planning on putting a metal ring on the top of the stinger so that it can be placed inside a pintle allowing me to be towed. This is will be a slow build, and I will update it as fast as I can.

I was at the junk yard and found this bumper, $10, a weird look from the salesman when I asked to buy it and it was mine. It is made of 1/4" steel plate with diamond plating on top.

It has been hit in the front causing it to twist but I cut out the front face plate and straightened it out. This will be the base for my bumper.

Or maybe he has a tow rig but no trailer for the Jeep?

Pretty sure he mentions breaking down and doing this so it'll be easier to tow next time.

I do have faith in my rig, but I also understand that parts break. So since I'm already making the bumper I mine as well make a easier way to tow my rig when it does brakes down.

Why not use that extra effort to make good quality tow points front and rear then turn some attention to the things that could leave you on the side of the road.

Of all the Jeeps I've seen... the only ones I see with permanent tow bars on the front are the ones old people haul behind their huge motor homes.

I mean, who's going to be around with a pintle hitch anyways? Do you plan on carrying one in the Jeep?

A good tow point and a nice tow strap will do just as well no farther than it needs to be flat towed.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. I like that you're re-purposing old stuff.

To answer you thoughts, in Oregon it is illegal to tow someone with just a tow strap. Ive done it in a pinch, but when I saw how you can tow a vehicle as long as it is attached like a car to an RV I thought why not put that system into effect. As far as the pintle, I always run with a pintle vs a ball because I like that system better. All I will need is another vehicle with a hitch, and Ill take care of the rest. I agree that having a good tow point and a strap will get me out of the woods fine, but the thought is more on the road. Plus I'm already making the front bumper anyways and adding this system really doesn't add a ton of extra fabbing.

Thanks! I try to keep that motto. I got the bumper off of a MJ. Its front was all smashed up so I just looked around for anything cool and saw something shinny in the bed. So I drug it out and found this. The guy gave me this look of, really? you want to buy this? It made my day. Plus $10 for a basic framework saves me time as well as money.

So this last weekend I did alot of work on the bumper and got most of the metal for the bumper fabbed and tacked into place. Heres the progression from the junk yard to where she sits now.

I also thought that cutting a slight slope in the end pieces would enhance the overall look of the bumper.

I also got a hitch from a local store and cut that down to fit.
