Well got started on my homebrew swing out tire carrier. I decided to weld up my supports to the sides of the hitch, it was an easy spot to get to for support. I basically 90 off one support till it cleared the gate. The measured out my swing arm to the other support. Drill holes threw the arm and the supports, put a bolt threw the side you want to pivot from and a pin in the other. Then make your tire mount off the arm were ever you please. I chose more to the passenger side for better rear view mirror visibility. Then I plan on making a tray on the other side for a gas can or high jack or shovel mounting....ect. I'll put up more pics when I get it done and the tape is just to block the water till I get it closed up.

Totally not trying to be a dick, that said your welds look a little questionable and that material looks a little thin tto support that much weight bouncing up and down. What welder did you use and whats the thickness of that tubing? Did you remove the hitch and weld your supports onto it off the vehicle or did you weld them on with the hitch still on the vehicle? Whats your bolt and pivot pin made from? Grade 8? Again I'm not trying to be a dick but there are a lot of things to consider when your hanging 100 pounds off the back of your ride.

Its a great start, i like the idea but just want to make sure you have some important things done before you put a tire on there and then have major repairs a week later...

My thoughts are always; "Remember, there are people behind you who drive as well"........if anything is questioned, you probably should'nt put other people out there at risk.

Material is fine, welds are fine. My dad did the welding and I've never seen anything of his break so I'm not concerned. Like said I'm not even done with it yet so hold off on negativity till you see it done. Thanks for bringing up the pivot point I am going to redo that spot and sleeve it. Think I'm going to use a pipe sleeved into another pipe with a bolt threw it. And I still am going to put more support in on 90. Hope to get more pics up tomorrow if I can get to my dads shop

Looks like a good project for ya. I do recommend before you "finish", get the spare you'll be using and hang it on what ever mount you decide to make. Swing the unit open and closed so you see weak points, flex and so on. Then you can add gussets, bushings and nessasary hardware. Good job though. You have any plans for other mods?

If it's welded good and mounted good, then there is nothing to worry about!
To the OP - Don't even give in to the negative crap you're hearing...

when i make a swing out, i always sit on the swing when open to see if it flexes and how much, then gusset/rebuild what's needed.
if it can hold my 140lb weight when open, it should hold my 36 inch spare.
i can probably sit on mine with my wife on my lap.

Good sound advice. The steel looks thin in the pics but who knows. It'll depend on what size your spare is. My 38 is heavy and would bend and/or break off your mounts but a stock size tire may be OK. With it closed I'd pull back and forth on it to mimik what the tire will do while driving.
