Simple Cage ideas
here are a few bad pics from an xj cage I did. I try and keep it as tight to the body as possible so fingers cant fit in between. I also turn in all joints so that the welds can be fully welded no half welded joints.... ever...

maybe this will throw you a few ideas
Good luck

just think triangles when building a cage. and no poo pipe. use tube.
^nice clean cage, however, i'm not a fan of internal cages, jeeps are tight enough inside without a cage. that one looks like a knee banger to get in and out of.
go external, unless you're running nascar with your jeep. haha
external gives enough protection for a slow flop, or if built correctly, can protect for a nasty roll off an off-camber climb gone wrong.
just my opinion tho...

yeah, there is a bit, i guess. like rock rails and bumpers first to be able to tie it all into place. plus clean looks counts a bit more too.
but for the cool factor.....external has just a wee bit more. lol.

Anyone seen many hybrid exo-internal cages?
I like the look of the internal cage, but want more room in the front of the XJ. "2dr"
I was thinking about doing an internal cage from the b-pillar back to the rear quarters, then tying it into an external cage that could connect over the b-pillar, and extend forward down the a-pilars and down into the fenders connecting with rock rails or beefed up tube rockers.
Anyone ever seen anything like this?
wondering how it would look, either that or I am just going to do a internal 6pt roll cage from the b-pillar back.

Similar to what i had considered. Internal from B-pillar back. Tied into a tubular roofrack that runs the length of the rig, down the A-pillars and through fenders to rockrails. In the end i decided i didnt want all that weight on a rig that doesnt see harder trails anymore.

I agree, Thank You. I do not think a exo cage is realistic for XJ's that are Daily Drivers cause of the Laws and unwelcomed attention.
I love the way they look and I agree that you do not have to worry about being cramped and bumping your head but that is better than being pulled over everyday.

yeah here in colorado cops see crawlers driving around town everyday....so im sure the are used to it. i am 26 and i have only seen maybe two lifted jeeps pulled over here around denver EVER!!! they leave us jeep guys alone.
last time i went to moab i got alot of dirty looks from the highway patrol....moab cops were pretty cool though......
back to the topic......triangulation to any cage is key. oh yeah, and dont use the harbor frieght tube masher(bender).
when doing an exo its hard to triangulate.......but most of my roof tubes intersect with the down tubes. you want this to spread the load of a roll on the whole cage instead of just your contact point.
one more downside to an exo is fully welding all tubes. its to close to the body to be able to weld the back side of most the tubes. tach it all together then lift the cage up til you can weld the back side of the tubes....this can be a PITA!!!!!
